OpenS2 supports the National Citizens Movement for Free Election (NAMFREL) As part of its social responsibility program, OpenS2 provided support to NAMFREL in the form of professional services. The services focused on design, setup, installation, management, and maintenance of NAMFREL's core Short Messaging System (SMS) based data acquisition program. OpenS2 together with Imperium Technology developed a high-performance distributed processing system to handle message acquisition, validation, and storage from NAMFREL volunteers in the field. The task involved developing a system that could handle and process a peak load of 300 messages per second coming from 230,000 volunteers in the field. NAMFREL volunteers transmitted election results through the GSM networks of the three major mobile providers in the Philippines. The system automatically performed many stringent checks on each message sent by a volunteer and stored valid data to a central database for automated tabulation. Some of the open source software used for the system included MySQL and Kannel. Custom programming was done in PHP and C. The solution used SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, donated in kind by Novell. The servers were a combination of IBM, HP, Fujitsu, and PC-compatible servers. |
